Transformers Combaticons: Onslaught, Swindle & Co — Complete Guide
The Combaticons
Onslaught, Swindle, Vortex, Blast-Off & Brawl — The soldiers who become Bruticus
While the Constructicons invented the Combiner concept, the Combaticons perfected its military philosophy. Five elite soldiers, each a master in their combat specialty, capable of merging into Bruticus — a war machine so unstable and devastating that even Megatron sometimes struggles to control it.
Appearing in 1985 in season 2 of the G1 series, the Combaticons distinguish themselves from other Decepticon teams by one essential point: they are professional soldiers. Not scientists like Hook, not looters like the Insecticons — they are pure military personnel, trained for a single objective: victory by any means necessary. This guide covers each member, their history, their role in Bruticus, and a complete guide to their action figures.
⚡ A Unique Origin: Born from Betrayal
The story of the Combaticons begins with Starscream — and that already signals that things won't go normally. After yet another humiliation at the hands of Megatron, Starscream decides to build his own army to seize power. He locates five imprisoned former Decepticon soldiers, considered too dangerous or uncontrollable to be kept in regular ranks, and frees them. He implants personality modules stolen from the military museum on Guadalcanal island, endowing them with new tactical capabilities.
This origin detail is essential to understanding the Combaticons: they are not loyal soldiers created to serve Megatron. They are renegades reprogrammed by a traitor. Their initial loyalty is to Starscream, not to the established Decepticon hierarchy. This explains their unpredictable behavior and their tendency to act independently, even when Megatron gives them direct orders. This rebellious nature is both their greatest strength — they never hesitate — and their greatest weakness in terms of military discipline.
Once Starscream's coup d'état fails, the Combaticons are finally integrated into the regular Decepticon army under Megatron's authority — but the distrust never completely disappears. They remain soldiers used for their efficiency, not allies cherished for their loyalty. This constant tension with the hierarchy is what makes their G1 episodes particularly interesting narratively.
👥 The Five Members in Detail
Each Combaticon represents a distinct military branch. Together, they form a unit capable of operating on all terrains simultaneously — a tactical versatility few Decepticon teams can match.
The strategic mastermind of the team and Bruticus' torso. Onslaught is a cold, calculating tactician who plans every attack with absolute military precision. His strategic intelligence is recognized even by his Autobot enemies. He despises emotions, considering them tactical flaws. A true general — ruthless, methodical, efficient.
The most memorable character among the Combaticons. Swindle is a born mercenary who would sell his teammates' parts if he thought he could profit from it — and he has. In the G1 episode "B.O.T.", he dismantles and sells Bruticus' components while his comrades sleep. Cunning, greedy, impossible to fully trust — but brilliant at finding improvised solutions.
Vortex loves to terrify his enemies as much as he loves fighting them. In helicopter mode, he performs extreme acrobatic maneuvers to disorient and sicken his targets before capturing them. He enjoys interrogating prisoners — and not just for information. His psychological cruelty clearly distinguishes him from the other team members.
The only Combaticon capable of operating in space. Blast-Off is arrogant and condescending — he believes himself superior to his terrestrial teammates whom he considers primitive. His shuttle can reach orbit and intercept targets at high altitudes. In Bruticus, he forms the right arm, a position that barely satisfies his oversized ego.
Perpetually angry. Brawl doesn't need a reason to fight — he just needs a target. His constant rage makes him an almost uncontrollable destructive machine, but also the most formidable fighter on the team in direct confrontations. In Bruticus, he forms the right leg. His firepower is the highest in the group.
💥 Bruticus — The Unstable War Machine
When the five Combaticons merge, they give birth to Bruticus — one of the most powerful and dangerous Combiners in the entire Transformers universe. What makes him special compared to other Combiners? He is fundamentally unstable.
Where Devastator is brutal but predictable, Bruticus is a ticking time bomb. The fusion of five such divergent personalities — Onslaught's cold calculus, Swindle's greed, Vortex's cruelty, Blast-Off's arrogance, and Brawl's blind rage — creates a combined consciousness constantly at war with itself. Bruticus can switch in seconds from maximum military efficiency to a totally uncontrolled destructive frenzy.
This instability is both his hallmark and his main limitation. Megatron must constantly weigh exploiting Bruticus' power against the risk of losing control of the situation. In several G1 episodes, Bruticus turns his violence against his own allies when no one can channel him — which paradoxically makes him one of the most credible threats in the entire series.
⚡ Bruticus — Combat Stats
The combined form of the five Combaticons
"Bruticus is not an ally. He is a weapon. And like all weapons, you need to know when to point it — and know that it can explode in your hands."

"Starscream's Brigade" — The Birth (Season 2)
The foundational episode. Starscream, exiled after a mutiny attempt, frees five Decepticon prisoners and transforms them into Combaticons. Bruticus' first appearance is memorable: he dominates the battle until the Autobots figure out how to exploit the instability of the fusion. This is also the episode where the traitor-soldier dynamic of the Combaticons is established for all their future appearances.
"B.O.T." — The Swindle Episode
One of the most memorable episodes of the entire G1 Season 2, and the best episode centered on an individual Combaticon. Swindle dismantles Bruticus to sell his parts. When Megatron discovers the betrayal, Swindle must retrieve all components before he is executed. An episode that perfectly captures the character's fundamental greed and shows the Combaticons in a more comedic light than usual.
Fall of Cybertron (2012) — The Renaissance
If the Combaticons experienced a massive surge in popularity in the 21st century, it is largely thanks to the game Fall of Cybertron. The level where you successively play as each Combaticon before merging them into Bruticus for an entire level has become legendary in the community. It was the first time a player could truly feel Bruticus' power — an experience that generated a wave of interest in figures from the Generations and Combiner Wars lines.
🛒 Combaticons Figures Guide
The Combaticons have had regular toy lines for 40 years. Here's how to navigate the current offerings:
Combiner Wars — The Modern Reference (2015)
The 2015 Combiner Wars line remains the absolute benchmark for modern Combaticons. Each member is available in Deluxe or Voyager class (Onslaught), with proportions calibrated to form a stable and imposing Bruticus. This is the line to prioritize if you want a complete Bruticus without a Masterpiece budget. Price per figure: €20–€45. The complete "Bruticus" collector's box set is the simplest solution to get the entire set at once.
Fall of Cybertron — The Cybertronian Design (2012)
Directly inspired by the video game, this line offers more angular and "mech" designs than the G1 version. Swindle, Brawl, Vortex, Blast-Off, and Onslaught all had their figures in this line. Difficult to find new today, they remain highly sought after by fans of the game. Secondary market price: €25–€60 depending on the character.
Third-Party Masterpiece
Brands like BadCube and TFC Toys offer Masterpiece versions of the Combaticons with near-perfect levels of detail and finish. These sets, often marketed under alternative names to circumvent rights issues, allow for an impressive, stable, and beautifully sculpted Masterpiece-scale Bruticus. Total budget: €200–€350.
