Les Duocons Transformers G1 : Battletrap et Flywheels

G1 Transformers Duocons: Battletrap and Flywheels

In the vast geography of the Transformers G1 line, two Decepticons occupy a strictly unique place: Battletrap and Flywheels, the Duocons. Their particularity is absolute — they are the only standard Transformers to possess two physically separate vehicles that merge to form a single robot. Not Triple Changers with two alt-modes integrated into a single body: two independent vehicles whose fusion creates the robot entity. A mechanism without equivalent in the entire G1 catalog.

Introduced in 1987 in the late G1 toy wave, the Duocons remained in the shadow of more famous characters. Yet, for collectors and fans of the franchise's mechanical aspect, these two Decepticons represent one of the most ingenious — and most underestimated — concepts in the entire line.

Battletrap: the helicopter and jeep combined

Battletrap is one of the two Duocons. His concept is simple in its statement, extraordinary in its execution: he consists of a military helicopter and an off-road jeep which, assembled one on top of the other, form a Decepticon robot. Both vehicles operate independently in separate alt-modes, meaning Battletrap can technically operate as two distinct entities before merging.

In combat mode, this duality offers rare operational flexibility: aerial cover via the helicopter, terrestrial capability via the jeep, and robot form for close combat. Battletrap is described in official profiles as a cruel and calculating Decepticon who takes pleasure in trapping his opponents by using his two alt-modes in a coordinated manner to create unavoidable ambushes.

Flywheels: the tank and fighter combined

Flywheels applies the same principle with a different configuration. His two alt-modes are a military tank and a fighter-bomber. The combination is even more menacing on paper than Battletrap's: a tank is the ultimate terrestrial brute force, and a fighter jet offers speed and aerial firepower.

Flywheels, however, suffers from a characteristic problem in character profiles: his two components are in constant disagreement. Ironically, Flywheels' physical unity does not guarantee his mental unity — the two halves of his being fight for control, creating a fundamentally divided character that scriptwriters have rarely been able to fully exploit in adaptations.

This psychological duality is a unique narrative thread among the Decepticons of the era, where most characters are defined by a single dominant ambition.

Duocons vs Triple Changers: a fundamental difference

Confusion between Duocons and Triple Changers is common, but the difference is fundamental. A Triple Changer like Blitzwing or Astrotrain is a single body that has multiple configurations. Its alt-modes are integrated into the same physical object.

A Duocon is two separate objects. Battletrap is literally two distinct toys in the box — a helicopter and a jeep — that combine. This approach is closer to some combiner concepts, but on the scale of a single character. It is this structural singularity that makes Duocons unique in the entire Transformers G1 catalog.

In terms of play, Duocons offer a distinctive experience: the child could play with two vehicles separately before assembling them into a robot. A playful proposition that Triple Changers — despite their versatility — could not replicate.

Duocons in G1 cartoon and comics

Battletrap and Flywheels are extremely discreet characters in G1 adaptations. In the American cartoon, they only appear in fleeting background appearances during mass Decepticon scenes. No episode is dedicated to them; no memorable dialogue is attributed to them.

Marvel comics offer them a slightly more generous treatment. In a few British and American issues, the Duocons play roles as Decepticon soldiers during infiltration missions — a context perfectly suited to their dual-vehicle architecture. Flywheels in particular benefits from a scene that illustrates his mental instability, confirming the depth of his character concept.

These two characters, however, remain primarily known as toys rather than narrative characters, which is common for figures introduced late in the original G1 line. For collectors of rare figures, finding them complete in box is a real challenge.

Frequently Asked Questions about Duocons

What is a Transformers Duocon?

A Duocon is a Transformer whose robot body is formed by the assembly of two physically separate vehicles. Only Battletrap and Flywheels have this status in the official 1987 G1 catalog.

What do Battletrap and Flywheels transform into?

Battletrap consists of a military helicopter and an all-terrain jeep. Flywheels is formed from a tank and a military fighter jet. In both cases, the two vehicles are independent objects that assemble into a robot.

Are Duocons and Triple Changers the same thing?

No. A Triple Changer is a single body with two alternate configurations. A Duocon is two separate bodies that merge into one robot. The difference is structural and fundamental in the toy's design.

Do Duocons appear in the G1 cartoon?

Yes, but very marginally. Battletrap and Flywheels have no dedicated episodes and only play background roles without significant dialogue. Marvel comics offer them slightly more substantial appearances.

Have Duocons been remade in a modern version?

Not in an official Hasbro version to date. Their unique concept makes re-release difficult to justify commercially. Kitbashers and fans have created custom versions, but no official re-release has been announced in major modern lines.

How much are G1 Duocons worth on the collector's market?

Complete G1 Duocons (with both vehicles) sell for between 50 and 200 euros depending on their condition. Unopened original box specimens can reach 300 to 500 euros, especially in the Japanese version.
