The Pretenders: When Transformers Hide Beneath Flesh
The Pretenders
The Transformers' long-standing motto is "Robots in Disguise." This usually involves scanning a car, plane, or tank to blend in. But what happens when transforming into a vehicle isn't enough to infiltrate enemy territory?
In 1988, the Cybertronian war took a horrific and fascinating turn with the invention of Pretender technology. Rather than allying with humans (as we explored in our feature on the role of humans ), some Transformers decided to become organic.
1. Armored Humans vs. Nightmarish Demons
The use of this organic shell differs radically depending on the faction. The choice of appearance perfectly reflects the philosophy of the two sides.
The Autobots: The Human Appearance
To better blend in with the population of Earth (or the planet Nebulos), the Autobot Pretenders created shells that resemble tall, athletic humans wearing futuristic armor. From the outside, it's impossible to tell that a metal robot is inside. The famous Metalhawk, hero of the Japanese series Super-God Masterforce , is one of the most respected Autobot Pretenders.
The Decepticons: Monsters of Space
The Decepticons, true to form, have no interest in resembling "mere" humans. Their Pretenders are designed to terrify. They take on the appearance of biomechanical monsters, horned demons, or reptilian beasts. The shell is not merely a disguise; it is a weapon of psychological warfare.
2. Bludgeon: The Ultimate Pretender
The most famous of all the Pretenders is none other than Bludgeon . This formidable Decepticon warrior is a master of the Cybertronian martial art of Metallikato .
His Pretender shell is terrifying: it resembles an undead samurai warrior, with a skeletal skull for a face. Inside this horrific shell lies a green and orange metallic tank. Bludgeon is so powerful and charismatic that he even temporarily led the Decepticons in Marvel comics after Megatron's disappearance.

If you think Pretenders only exist in old toys from the 80s, think again! Michael Bay masterfully introduced this concept in the film Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen .
Remember Alice , the college student who tries to seduce Sam Witwicky? Beneath her perfect human appearance, her biological skin eventually tears away, revealing a murderous metallic Decepticon armed with a tentacled tongue. It's the perfect (and horrifying) illustration of modern Pretender technology!
