Les Throttlebots : les Autobots rapides de la G1

The Throttlebots: G1's Fast Autobots

Among the many G1 generation Autobot groups, the Throttlebots are probably the least known to the general public. Introduced in 1987 in the third phase of G1 toys, they are nevertheless remarkable in more ways than one: they are six Autobots equipped with a self-lubricating gearbox system that makes them exceptionally fast, and one of them — Goldbug — is actually the franchise's most beloved robot under a new identity. This comprehensive guide looks back at each member, their history in the comics, and their place in the Transformers mythology.

Goldbug: Rebuilt Bumblebee

The big surprise of the Throttlebots group: Goldbug is none other than Bumblebee rebuilt. In the Marvel G1 comics, Bumblebee is severely damaged during a confrontation and the Nebulans (alien humanoids allied with the Autobots) repair him, giving him a new, larger, faster body and renaming him Goldbug. This transition is rarely touched upon in the animated series, where Goldbug barely appears, but the comics explore it in a touching way.

Goldbug is the natural leader of the Throttlebots. Retaining Bumblebee's kindness and empathy, he brings a human dimension to the group. His alt-mode is a golden Volkswagen — a direct reference to Bumblebee's original yellow Beetle. His knowledge of human-Autobot relations is a valuable asset for the diplomatic management of missions on Earth.

Chase, Rollbar, Freeway, Searchlight, and Wideload

Chase (police car) is the group's cop: obsessed with order, rules to be followed to the letter and without exception. He frequently clashes with Freeway (sports car), who takes all shortcuts to go fast and doesn't care about regulations. This tension between the two characters is one of the recurring comedic elements of the group in the comics.

Rollbar (off-road 4x4) is the adventurer: he excels in difficult terrain and rescue operations in isolated areas. Searchlight (race car) is the most curious of the group — he explores and analyzes before acting, an interesting contrast to the brute force of the rest of the Throttlebots. Wideload, finally, transforms into a dump truck — the only heavy vehicle in the group. Less fast than his colleagues, he compensates with his transport strength and logistical utility.

The Throttlebots in Marvel Comics

The Throttlebots had their moment of glory in Marvel UK and US comics. The "Wanted: Galvatron Dead or Alive" arc and several subsequent stories place them at the heart of confrontations with the Decepticons and even with humans, as the American government at one point targets them as a potential threat. This narrative arc is one of the most original in G1 comics: for once, the main adversaries are not the Decepticons, but human suspicion towards the Autobots.

Their popularity in the comics eclipsed their very limited presence in the animated series. Unlike groups like the Constructicons or the Combaticons, the Throttlebots do not have a combiner, which makes them less spectacular on screen — hence their relative discretion in animation.

"Throttlebot" technology and toys

The name "Throttlebot" refers to the technology integrated into the original toys: a friction gearbox that, when you pull back and release the figurine in vehicle mode, propels it at high speed for a few meters. This mechanism was innovative for 1987 and made the toys particularly fun for children. The downside: the robot/vehicle transformation is very simplified, with few steps.

Today, vintage G1 Throttlebots are easily found on collector markets at affordable prices. Their friction mechanism is often still functional. For modern figurine enthusiasts, check out our selection of Transformers figurines and our guide to vintage G1 figurines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the 6 members of the Throttlebots?

Goldbug (leader, ex-Bumblebee), Chase, Freeway, Rollbar, Searchlight, and Wideload. Each transforms into a fast land vehicle with an integrated friction mechanism.

Is Goldbug really Bumblebee?

Yes, in the Marvel comics continuity. Bumblebee is rebuilt and renamed Goldbug after being severely damaged. He retains Bumblebee's memories and personality but has a new, larger, more powerful body.

Do the Throttlebots form a combiner?

No, the Throttlebots do not form a combiner. This is one reason for their relative obscurity in the animated series, where combiners were spectacular moments highly anticipated by fans.

How does the "Throttlebot" mechanism work?

The original Throttlebot toys have an integrated friction gearbox. By pulling the vehicle back and releasing it, it is propelled forward. This mechanism was standard in many 80s car toys.

Where do the Throttlebots appear in animation?

Very little. A few fleeting appearances in G1 Season 3, with few dialogues. Their true narrative presence is in the Marvel US and UK comics, where they play well-written roles over several issues.

Are there modern versions of the Throttlebots?

Few. Goldbug had a modern version in the Generations line. The other members had very limited versions. The Throttlebots remain a group little exploited by Hasbro in modern lines, which makes them rare on the current market.
